What is memory foam made of?

Memory foam is made from polyurethane treated with chemicals that make it viscoelastic, meaning it softens with heat and pressure then slowly springs back. Manufacturers adjust the formula to change firmness, density and response speed. Common variations add cooling gel beads, copper or graphite for heat transfer, or plant-based oils that replace part of the petroleum to lower the new-mattress smell.
