Do foam mattresses need a box spring?

Foam mattresses do not need a box spring and usually should not use one. A traditional box spring is built to flex with an innerspring bed, and its open springs leave foam unsupported, which can lead to sagging. Foam needs a firm, flat and even base instead, such as a platform bed, a solid foundation, or a slatted frame with gaps no wider than about three inches to stop the foam from bowing through.
