Do you actually need a box spring?
It depends entirely on what your mattress sits on. You need a supportive base, but that base does not have to be a box spring. If you have a platform bed, a slatted frame with gaps under about 3 inches, or an adjustable base, you do not need one. You do need a box spring or solid foundation if your frame is just a bare metal rail set designed to hold one.
