Does a bed frame need a box spring?
It depends on the frame design, not a universal rule. Platform frames and slatted frames with closely spaced boards support the mattress on their own and need no box spring. Open metal rail frames, and many traditional panel beds, are built to hold a box spring or solid foundation and require one. Check the slat spacing: gaps no wider than about 3 inches mean a foam or hybrid mattress is supported without an added foundation.
