What is ILD in a mattress?

ILD, or indentation load deflection, measures how firm a foam is by the pounds of force needed to compress it 25 percent. A lower ILD feels softer and a higher ILD feels firmer. Comfort-layer foams often sit around 10 to 20 ILD, with support foams higher. Remember that ILD describes firmness while density describes durability, so a foam can be soft yet still long-lasting.
