How to Choose the Right Tempur-Pedic Mattress

TEMPUR® Material is the reason a Tempur-Pedic® mattress feels unlike other foam beds, and it is worth knowing what separates it from ordinary memory foam. It is viscoelastic and noticeably denser, and it responds to your body heat as well as your weight. Two things follow. It conforms very precisely, flowing away from the points of highest pressure instead of compressing evenly, spreading your weight across a wider area. And it recovers slowly without pushing back. A resilient foam or a spring returns energy to you, and that is what you feel as counter-pressure under a shoulder or hip. TEMPUR Material mostly stops resisting instead, which is why people describe it as being moulded rather than supported.

The same property explains the trade-offs. Because the material absorbs energy rather than returning it, movement barely travels, so a restless partner is close to unnoticeable. For the same reason it takes more effort to change position, and material that wraps closely holds warmth more than an open structure, so cover and layer choices matter if you sleep hot. Models built with premium spring coils or heat-tempered steel coils under the TEMPUR layers answer both: springs move air through the mattress and add a lift that makes turning over easier, keeping the conforming feel on top. The firmness options are Firm, Medium and Plush.

🧬

Precise Conforming

A denser viscoelastic material flows away from pressure rather than squashing flat, so weight spreads over more of the surface and the sharpest pressure points are relieved rather than merely cushioned.

🔇

Movement Absorbed

Energy goes into the material instead of bouncing back, so a partner getting up barely registers on your side. All foam leads on motion isolation, with pocketed coil hybrids close behind; our motion transfer guide sets out the order.

🔩

All Foam or Hybrid

Premium spring coils and heat-tempered steel coils sit beneath the TEMPUR layers to add airflow, a springier lift and a steadier perimeter. Compare the approaches in our hybrid, foam and innerspring comparison.

Firmness Choices

Options run Firm, Medium and Plush. Judge each lying in your normal sleeping position for several minutes, since this material keeps changing shape as it warms.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

What is TEMPUR Material, and how does it differ from ordinary memory foam?
Both are viscoelastic, meaning they soften with body heat and return to shape slowly. TEMPUR Material is considerably denser, so it conforms more precisely and redistributes weight over a wider area rather than simply dipping where you press. It also returns very little energy, so you feel almost no counter-pressure pushing back at the shoulder or hip. The practical difference is closer contouring and a more settled feel.
Does a TEMPUR mattress sleep hot?
Any material that wraps closely around you retains more warmth than an open, airy structure, because less skin is exposed and less air moves. That is a property of dense viscoelastic foam generally, not a flaw in one brand. Cool-to-touch covers and models with a spring layer for airflow both address it. Our guide to cooling mattresses explains which measures make a real difference.
What do premium spring coils add compared with an all foam TEMPUR mattress?
Springs bring back the qualities foam gives up. Air moves through a coil layer, so heat has somewhere to go. Coils also return energy, which makes changing position easier and stops the bed feeling like it holds you. A sprung perimeter is usually steadier to sit on as well. You keep the conforming TEMPUR feel on top and gain lift underneath.
Is there a break-in period, and why does it feel firmer at first?
Yes, and the reason is physical rather than psychological. Viscoelastic material softens as it warms toward body temperature, so a mattress in a cool room genuinely is firmer than the same mattress after twenty minutes under you. New layers also need time to relax. Most people report the feel settling over several weeks, worth remembering before judging a bed in a showroom.
Should a TEMPUR mattress be flipped or rotated?
Layered mattresses are built one sided, with comfort materials on top and support beneath, so flipping one puts the support layers against your body. Rotating it head to foot is the useful move, since it spreads wear rather than letting an impression deepen in one spot. Check the care instructions for your model before setting a routine.
Which firmness should I choose: Firm, Medium or Plush?
Side sleepers usually want Plush or Medium, because the shoulder and hip have to sink for the spine to stay level. Back sleepers generally do best on Medium or Firm, while stomach sleepers want the firm end of that pair, which keeps the hips from dropping below the ribs. Remember that conforming material makes a given label feel softer than the same label on a firmer sprung bed.
