5 Ways To Decide On What Size Mattress To Get

Are you struggling to decide between mattress sizes? Buying a new mattress happens only every so often, in-fact, the typical lifespan of a new mattress is anywhere between 10 to 12 years, so ensuring you pick the correct size for your situation is key to benefiting from your selection for the present, as well as later on down the road.

Today, we will be going over 5 things you should consider to help you choose the best mattress size so you can avoid making a mistake when picking out your new mattress.

Let’s dive right into our 5 tips!

1. Consider Your Room Size

Tailoring the appropriate size mattress to your room should be one of the first things that should come to mind when making your decision. Having the correct dimensions pre-measured will give you an idea as to how much space you will have to freely walk around in your bedroom without your environment feeling overly crowded.

The best practical step you can make here is to simply cycle through all the mattress sizes and make reference marks on the floor of your bedroom. We found that the best way you can do this is by using painters tape and simply mirroring your desired mattress size on your floor to see if it works for your room.

Simply figure out where you want to position your bed and then create a rectangle mirroring your desired mattress size so you can see how much clearance and space you will have in your room around your mattress. Be sure to include any bed frames you are using as well, as they may be slightly wider or longer than your mattress.

3. Know Your Personal Size Limitations

Whether you are a taller or shorter individual, there is destined to be a mattress size just for you! It is important to measure your height so that you can purchase a mattress that can support your entire body without leaving any leg overhang if you're taller. For shorter persons, this of course won't be an issue, as there is no such thing as a too big of a mattress for a person.

2. Thinking Ahead

If you are preparing to move later down the road to a new home, then there is a good chance that you may upgrade to a larger size bedroom. If that is the case, then you may want to consider getting a larger mattress so you can have more freedom to move around.

Also, if you are living alone or single looking to build a relationship with someone who you will live with later down the road, then going from a double or single mattress to a queen or king may be a good idea in order to accommodate the other person. The last thing you want is shopping for another mattress when you don't have to!

4. Your Sleeping Position

Many people don't consider that the way they sleep at night has a major influence on the size bed they should go for. If you sleep sprawled out and you're slightly taller on a single or double mattress, then you will most likely find your feet and arms dangling off your mattress. This can not only cause undisturbed sleep due to discomfort, but may also cut off blood circulation caused by the edges of the mattress pressing against your muscles or joints.

However, if you sleep in a more curled up fetal position, then you will want to get a wider mattress such as a queen in order to provide enough surface area for your body. This will not only provide support, but will help you achieve a comfortable and undisturbed sleeping experience.

5. Consider Your Sleeping Partner

Last but not least is choosing a mattress that will accommodate both you and your sleeping partner. Understanding how your partner sleeps, along with their height and body type will help you determine the best size mattress.

Typically, you will want to aim for a queen or king size for two people. Anything less will not allow room for movement and will only result in one of the two persons becoming cranky due to a terrible sleeping experience from the night prior.
