How To Choose The Right Mattress? A Simple Guide To Your Next Best Sleep!

how to choose the best mattress for your sleep

Shopping for a mattress can be quite a confusing and overwhelming journey. With so many options out there from brands along with hundreds of models, it can make it really difficult to select the right mattress for your specific needs, especially after the first purchase.

However, with the right knowledge as to what you should look for when shopping, you can eliminate half of that battle. So today, we will be simplifying the process of selecting the right mattress by showing you some quick guidelines you can follow so that you can get the sleep you deserve and avoiding the headaches of returns or exchanges when shopping for your next mattress!

Let’s begin!

Foam Vs Inner-Spring/Pocket-Coil

One of the first qualities you should be considering when selecting your mattress is whether you want your mattress to consist of foam, or springs. Both can make a significant difference in how your body responds to your mattress.

Foam mattresses are a great option if you are looking for optimal support and don't want any motion transfer when turning at night or when sleeping next to your partner. However, the downside of foam mattresses is that they often feel hotter due to their lack of heat dissipation and breathability. There are several different types of foam mattresses, from memory foam, gel, to standard foam. They all offer their own set of unique benefits when it comes to both comfort and support.

Coil mattresses are pretty much the opposite of foam. They may feel more bouncy which can result in you feeling the movement of your sleeping partner, but they keep you much cooler at night due to their ability to breathe. The coils are designed to have pockets or spaces between them so that air can flow freely throughout the springs. This results in less pressure and more airflow, providing circulation as well. It also means better help with motion transfer from one side of the bed to another, however, it's not as effective as foam mattresses due to the springs.

Comfort Level

Next, you will want to determine the comfort level of your mattress. They can come in many options including plush, medium, firm, or extra firm. The way you sleep will primarily determine the comfort level that is most appropriate for you.

Many people today fall into the belief that firmer mattresses are better for you, however, this only applies to back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers who sleep on a too-firm of a mattress may also experience back pain due to the space created in between their hip and shoulder. This reduces the amount of support provided to the central spine, and can even cause back pain due to the lack of this support.

A great example when testing this is to lay on a hard surface, such as the floor. Notice how there is a gap between your hips and shoulders when laying on your side. An extremely firm mattress will result in the same type of lacking support.

On the other hand, soft to medium mattresses are better for side sleepers, as long as there is enough support provided and your spine is aligned. They can make up for the amount of space between your hips and shoulders, pushing your spine up in order to help align it properly.

If you are aiming for a firmer mattress that can accommodate all positions, typically a medium-firm range is most ideal. Remember that there is a large spectrum to each labeled comfort level, which is why trying the mattresses out before purchasing becomes so important during the selection process.

Choosing The Right Size Mattress

Choosing the right size mattress should be simple enough. Two factors primarily play in when it comes to selecting the appropriate size, your partner (if you have one), as well as the size of your bedroom. Make sure to consider how much space you will need in order to have enough clearance to comfortably walk around without running into anything. Take measurements and also plan for the future in case you move.

Also, you may want to think about the height of the mattress. If you have children, then this can make it much safer for them, including small pets. The height of the mattress also becomes important for the elderly, as they lack more strength in later years and need the ability to push themselves up when getting off. This also applies to your personal height if you want to make getting up less awkward on your body.

Consider Your Partner

If you live with a partner, then be sure to consider their needs in terms of their comfort preference, size, and sleeping position. Testing the mattresses at your local store together can allow you to successfully find a compromise and prevent you from ending up sleeping on the coach!

Following the above guidelines can take the confusion out of selecting the right mattress for you. There are many factors that play together, and as long as you can check off all of them, there is no doubt that you will be happy with your decision.
