Firm Extra Firm Stearns & Foster® Luxury Mattresses and Accessories

Firm mattresses give you the most support of our everyday comfort levels — a solid, stable surface that keeps your spine aligned instead of sinking in. Firm is the go-to for back and stomach sleepers, heavier-weight sleepers who need extra support, and anyone looking for orthopedic, back-friendly comfort; side sleepers or those who like a softer feel may prefer our medium or plush options. Choose from tight-top, foam, euro-top and hybrid builds across Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Stearns & Foster, iComfort, Tempur-Pedic, Chirofoam and our own NM line — from budget-friendly models at $59 to premium, with free delivery across Canada. • Feel: firm gives a solid, supportive surface with minimal sink-in • Best for: back and stomach sleepers, heavier-weight sleepers, and orthopedic / back-pain support • Consider softer if you sleep on your side or want more cushioning — see our medium or plush options • Constructions: tight-top (most firm beds), foam, euro-top and hybrid • Brands: Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Stearns & Foster, iComfort, Tempur-Pedic, Chirofoam, Springwall & NM • Prices: from $59 (budget) to premium — our widest price range • Want the firmest feel? See our extra-firm mattresses
Extra firm mattresses are the firmest, most supportive feel we carry — a hard, no-sink surface that holds your body on top of the mattress rather than letting it settle in. They're built for stomach sleepers, heavier-weight sleepers and anyone who finds a standard firm mattress still too soft, delivering maximum support and spinal alignment. Most use a tight-top or high-density foam construction (including orthopedic Chirofoam), with budget-friendly options that keep extra-firm support affordable. Shop Beautyrest, Serta, Chirofoam, Springwall and our own NM line — from $152, with free delivery across Canada. • Feel: extra firm is the firmest of our four comfort levels — a hard, no-sink surface • Best for: stomach sleepers, heavier-weight sleepers, and anyone who wants maximum support • Choose this over firm if a standard firm mattress still feels too soft • Consider firm or medium if you sleep on your side or want any cushioning • Constructions: tight-top and high-density foam (including orthopedic Chirofoam) • Brands: Beautyrest, Serta, Chirofoam, Springwall & NM • Prices: from $152 — an affordable, value-focused selection

How to Choose the Right Stearns & Foster Mattress

The distinguishing piece of engineering in a Stearns & Foster® mattress is IntelliCoil®, which puts a smaller coil inside a larger one. That nesting gives the spring two stages instead of one. Light pressure compresses only the outer coil, so the surface yields easily under a shoulder or an elbow. As more weight arrives, the inner coil engages and the spring firms up sharply, which is what stops a heavier hip from sinking through to the base. A single coil must be either soft enough to contour or firm enough to support, and a nested coil sidesteps that trade by changing behaviour partway down. The wire is heat-tempered drawn spring steel, which substantially reduces the height a coil loses under repeated loading without eliminating it; in most beds the comfort layers soften before the springs weaken.

Above the coils, the comfort layer decides the feel, and two very different materials appear. Talalay latex is made by a process that leaves an open, evenly distributed cell structure, and it behaves like a resilient cushion: buoyant, quick to spring back, inclined to lift you rather than let you settle in. Memory foam does the opposite, softening with body heat and yielding slowly so it holds the shape of whatever presses into it. Neither is better, they simply feel unalike, and that choice matters more than the label. You can choose Extra Firm, Firm, Medium and Plush.

🔄

Two Stage Coil Response

The nested IntelliCoil design gives easily at first and then firms up as the inner coil takes over, so the same spring can contour at the shoulder and hold firm under the hip.

🌱

Talalay Latex

An open cell structure makes Talalay latex springy and breathable, pushing back rather than cradling. Our Dunlop and Talalay comparison explains how the two latex processes differ.

Latex or Memory Foam

Latex lifts and responds instantly, memory foam sinks and holds. If you dislike feeling enclosed, favour latex. If you want pressure spread widely, favour memory foam. Our side by side guide covers both.

📊

Firmness Choices

Available in Extra Firm, Firm, Medium and Plush, bearing in mind that a latex layer reads firmer than a memory foam layer of the same depth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stearns & Foster Mattresses

What is IntelliCoil, and how does a coil inside a coil work?
IntelliCoil nests a smaller spring inside a larger one so the coil responds in two stages. Under light load only the outer coil compresses, giving a soft initial surface. Under heavier load the inner coil engages and resistance climbs steeply. That progressive behaviour lets one spring contour to a shoulder and still support a hip, which a single fixed coil cannot do at once.
How do IntelliCoil and IntelliCoil Advanced relate to each other?
Both apply the same nested coil principle, so expect the two stage response in each. The names distinguish how that design is executed in a particular build, including coil height and assembly. Because the depth of the coil and the layers above it change the result, compare the individual model specification rather than assuming one name always feels firmer.
What does Talalay latex feel like compared with memory foam?
Talalay latex feels buoyant. Press it and it pushes back immediately, so you rest closer to the surface and change position without fighting the mattress. Memory foam is viscoelastic: it softens with your body heat, gives way slowly and holds an impression, so you feel cradled and slightly enclosed. Sleepers who dislike sinking usually prefer latex; those who want pressure spread widely prefer memory foam.
Does a Talalay latex layer sleep cooler than memory foam?
Generally yes, for two structural reasons. The Talalay process leaves an open, interconnected cell structure that lets air move through the layer, and because latex compresses less deeply you are wrapped by less material. Memory foam conforms closely around you, which traps warmth against the skin. If heat is your main complaint, latex is the more natural starting point.
Does a nested coil help if my partner and I are different weights?
It helps, because each spring responds to the load directly on it. A lighter sleeper mostly compresses the outer coil and gets a softer surface, while a heavier sleeper engages the inner coil and gets extra support, all within the same mattress. Independently wrapped coils also limit how much movement crosses the bed, which our motion transfer guide explains.
Which firmness should I choose, and does the comfort material change that?
Start from sleep position: side sleepers usually need Medium or Plush so the shoulder can drop, while back sleepers do best around Medium to Firm. Stomach sleepers, and heavier sleepers, are the ones suited to Extra Firm. The material then shifts the impression: latex reads firmer and more supportive at a given label, memory foam reads softer because it yields gradually.

Latex or Memory Foam Comfort Layer?

Our non-commissioned sleep experts can put the two feels side by side and explain what the nested coil changes, and you can read the terms of our sleep trial first.
