Medium Mattresses for Standard Bed Frames Adjustable Bed Compatible Mattresses Marshall® Handcrafted Luxury Mattresses

Medium-firmness mattresses — often called medium-firm — sit right between plush and firm, which is why they're the most popular and versatile feel we carry. You get enough cushioning to relieve pressure with enough support to keep your spine aligned, making medium a safe choice for back sleepers, combination sleepers who change positions through the night, and couples who need a compromise between two preferences. Shop medium models from Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Stearns & Foster, iComfort and Tempur-Pedic across memory foam, hybrid, euro-top, pillow-top and tight-top builds — with free delivery across Canada. • Feel: medium sits between plush and firm — balanced and the most versatile of our four comfort levels • Also called "medium-firm" — the middle of the firmness scale • Best for: back sleepers, combination sleepers, couples, and most body types • Consider plush if you sleep on your side; firm if you sleep on your stomach or want more support • Constructions: euro-top, tight-top, pillow-top, memory foam and hybrid • Brands: Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Stearns & Foster, iComfort, Tempur-Pedic, Springwall & NM • Prices: from $171 to premium
These mattresses are built for a standard bed frame, box spring or platform bed rather than an adjustable base — solid, no-flex support for a classic setup. Shopping by feel or build instead? Browse by comfort (plush, medium, firm) or by type (memory foam, hybrid, pocket coil, traditional). Using an adjustable base? See our adjustable-bed-compatible mattresses. Every order includes a 365-night sleep trial and free delivery across Canada.
Not every mattress can bend with an adjustable base — but these can. Every mattress here is built to flex with the head and foot articulation of an adjustable base without damaging the comfort layers, so you can read, relax in Zero-Gravity or elevate your legs with confidence. In fact, over 90% of our mattresses are adjustable-compatible, spanning memory foam, hybrid and pocket-coil constructions from every brand — NM, Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster and more — at every budget from about $109 to premium. Foam and hybrid models flex most easily, while rigid, thick tight-top innersprings generally don't. Pair any of these with one of our adjustable bases, and every mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial and free delivery across Canada. • What this means: mattresses built to flex with an adjustable base's head & foot articulation • Over 90% of our mattresses are adjustable-compatible — every brand, every budget ($109+) • Best constructions for adjustable bases: memory foam, hybrid and pocket-coil • What usually won't work: rigid, thick tight-top innersprings that don't bend • Pairs with our adjustable bases (including split-king for independent sides) • Every order: 365-night sleep trial, price-match guarantee & free Canada-wide delivery

How to Choose a Marshall Mattress

A Marshall mattress is a pocket coil bed, so the pocket coil is the part worth understanding before you start comparing feels. Each spring of heat-tempered drawn spring steel sits in its own fabric pocket, so it compresses only under the weight directly above it. The surface then follows the shape of your body, deeper beneath the hip and shoulder and shallower beneath the waist, rather than forming one broad hammock the way a connected coil unit can. Two things follow. Support is local, so the spine holds a straighter line, and movement is local, so a partner turning over does not travel across the bed.

Firmness on a pocket coil bed comes from two places: the spring unit itself, and the comfort layers above it. That is why a plush model and a firm one can share a support core and still feel nothing alike. Match the comfort layer to your position first. Side sleepers need enough give at the shoulder and hip to keep the spine level, usually medium or plush; back sleepers and stomach sleepers need the pelvis held near the surface, usually firm. Then account for weight, since a heavier sleeper compresses foam and springs further and often needs a step firmer than the label suggests. Kiln-dried wood belongs to the foundation side of the equation: lower moisture content means a frame that stays dimensionally stable under load.

Pocket Coil Support

Individually wrapped steel springs respond only where weight is applied, so the surface contours to your body instead of flattening it. See more pocket coil mattresses.

🤝

Motion Isolation

Because the springs are not wired together, movement stays where it happens. That makes pocket coil a first choice for couples and for anyone woken by a partner turning over.

🛠

Kiln-Dried Wood

Kiln drying lowers the moisture content of the lumber, so the wood stays stable and resists warping under years of load, which matters in the frame that carries the spring unit.

💤

Plush, Medium or Firm

One support core can wear very different comfort layers, so ask about feel and construction separately. Plush, medium and firm are choices to fit a body, not quality grades.

Frequently Asked Questions About Marshall Mattresses

What is a pocket coil mattress?
A pocket coil mattress carries its support in individual steel springs, each sewn into its own fabric pocket. Because the springs are not linked to one another, one can compress while its neighbour stays put, so the surface contours to your body point by point. The two practical benefits are closer support along the spine and far less motion transfer than a bed built on one connected spring unit.
Is a pocket coil better than a connected coil mattress?
On contouring and motion isolation, yes for most sleepers. A connected coil unit moves as a sheet, so weight in one spot lifts or drops the area around it and a partner's movement travels. Pocket coils act independently. Connected coil beds are simpler and tend to feel firmer, so they still suit shoppers who want a flat, very supportive surface. Compare the two constructions directly.
Does coil count matter in a pocket coil mattress?
Less than most shoppers expect. Past a reasonable threshold, adding more springs of the same gauge changes the feel very little, and figures are not comparable between makers because coil diameter, wire gauge and the number of turns all differ. Wire gauge and the quality of the tempering matter more, as does what sits above the springs.
What firmness should I choose for my sleeping position?
Side sleepers usually want medium or plush, because the shoulder and hip have to sink far enough for the spine to stay level. Back sleepers usually want firm to medium, holding the pelvis near the surface so the lumbar curve stays supported. Stomach sleepers usually want firm, since any sag through the middle extends the lower back. Heavier sleepers should try a step firmer than the guideline.
What should I compare when shopping for a pocket coil mattress?
Four things: the spring unit, including wire gauge, tempering and whether the perimeter is reinforced for edge support; the comfort layers above it; the cover and quilting; and how the whole thing feels after a full ten minutes lying in your usual position. Bring your own pillow if you can. Firmness labels are a starting point, not a standard, and they differ between makers.
How long should a pocket coil mattress last, and how do I care for it?
Plan to reassess a quality mattress somewhere around the eight to ten year mark. The springs usually outlast the comfort layers, so what you notice first is softening on top rather than lost support underneath. Rotate the mattress head to foot two or three times a year, use a mattress protector, and give it a sound base, because a sagging foundation ages a good spring unit quickly.
