What Makes a Mattress Breathable and How to Choose One

A breathable mattress promotes continuous airflow through its layers, wicking moisture away from your body and dissipating heat before it builds up. This matters most for hot sleepers, couples sharing a bed, and anyone in a climate with warm or humid nights. The key difference between a breathable mattress and a standard cooling mattress is structural: breathable designs use open-cell foams, ventilated coil cores, and moisture-wicking cover fabrics to move air passively, while active cooling relies on gel infusions or phase-change materials to absorb heat. Construction type directly affects airflow. Hybrid mattresses with pocket coil cores allow air to circulate beneath the comfort layers, while latex models feature a naturally open-cell structure that resists heat retention.
