How to Choose a Serta iComfort Mattress

iComfort is Serta's all-foam line, and the choice comes down to three things: how the foam is made, how it handles heat, and which firmness fits the way you sleep. Gel memory foam is viscoelastic foam with gel worked into it. The gel raises the foam's thermal mass, so the surface takes longer to reach body temperature and the warm pocket builds more slowly early in the night. It saturates after a while and then behaves much like the foam around it, which is why airflow, open-cell structure and the cover fabric do the sustained work. Moulded memory foam is formed in a shaped mould rather than cut from a large bun, so channels and firmness zones can be built into one continuous piece, letting the same layer respond differently under the shoulders and under the lower back. Some builds add latex, which rebounds faster than memory foam and gives the surface a livelier feel.

Firmness on an all-foam bed does not announce itself immediately, so trust your tenth minute on it more than your first: viscoelastic foam is firmest cold and softens as it warms toward body temperature, so a bed reads firmer in the first minutes and eases after about twenty. Plush lets the shoulder and hip sink, which is what side sleepers need to keep the spine level. Back sleepers generally do best on medium to firm, which fills the lumbar curve without flattening it, while stomach sleepers want the firm end so the pelvis is not left below the ribs. Medium is the middle ground and the safer pick for a combination sleeper. Body weight shifts all of it: a heavier sleeper compresses memory foam further, so a medium can behave like a plush. Density is the other lever, and memory foam at roughly 5 lb/ft³ and up holds its shape longer than the lighter grades that sit under 3.5.
