How the Mattress Selector Works

The selector asks the questions a good salesperson asks in the first two minutes — who the bed is for, your sleep position, your body type, where you ache, how warm you sleep, the feel you prefer, whether you want a pillow top, and (optionally) your budget — then uses your answers to narrow the range down to a shortlist. It draws on the same mattresses you can browse by hand, including Beautyrest, Serta, Sealy, Springwall, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster.

Answer the feel question honestly rather than aspirationally — if you’ve slept well on firm beds your whole life, say firm. Side sleepers generally need more give at the shoulder and hip, back and stomach sleepers want less sink so the spine stays neutral, and body weight changes how deeply any mattress compresses — which is why two people can lie on the same bed and honestly call it soft and firm.
