How to Choose a Bed Base or Guest Bed
What goes under a mattress is not one product category but several, and this page holds three of them. A motorised adjustable base replaces a flat foundation with a hinged platform that raises the head, the feet, or both, so you can change position without a stack of pillows. A heavy duty steel platform base does the opposite: it holds one plane on cross bars, the mattress sits straight on top, and at roughly fourteen inches it leaves usable space underneath. And a set of folding, rolling and trundle beds answers a different question entirely, which is where a guest sleeps when there is no spare room. Those are single and twin sized, built to hospitality specification, and made to be stowed rather than left standing.
If the adjustable base is what you are after, the mattress matters as much as the base. It has to bend repeatedly, so all-foam and latex models are the easiest match, pocket coil and hybrid mattresses generally articulate well, and a rigid connected coil innerspring with a stiff reinforced border can resist the curve. Check yours against our adjustable base friendly mattresses first. Then measure, because a base plus a tall mattress usually sits higher than the box spring it replaces, so a headboard needs a bracket kit and an existing bed frame must be deep enough to hold the base inside its rails. The same measuring applies to a platform base, and to a folding bed you intend to store in a closet.
Head Up, Feet Up, Zero Gravity
Sitting up to read, lifting the legs to unload the lower back, and the balanced zero gravity preset are what a motorised base is for.
A Fixed Platform Instead
The heavy duty platform base holds one plane on steel cross bars, with the mattress straight on top and roughly fourteen inches of clear space underneath.
Guest Beds That Stow Away
A trundle that slides under an existing bed, a pull out tray, a stow away bed and a folding rollaway cot, all single and twin sized and built to hospitality specification.
Measure Before You Order
Check rail depth, finished bed height and doorway clearance, and plan for a headboard bracket. See our guide to bases inside existing frames.
