Bedroom essentials are the pieces that turn a mattress into a finished bed. The NM platform bedframe is built from solid wood with a slatted support system, so it carries a mattress on its own without a box spring underneath, and it is offered in a natural finish and a walnut finish. The NM George and NM Layla headboards are upholstered rather than bare wood: George is a channel tufted charcoal panel on a walnut finish frame, Layla a curved white boucle panel on a natural finish frame. Each exists in that one finish, and both bolt onto the platform frame or any standard bolt-on bed frame.

If you are buying a bed and a mattress at the same time, the NM Essentials Bedroom Bundle pairs the solid wood platform frame with a memory foam or hybrid mattress, a headboard, a two drawer nightstand and the bedding that goes with them, in the same natural and walnut finishes. Start by fixing the mattress size, because the frame, the headboard and the sheets all follow from it. Then decide how much headboard you want standing above the pillows.

How to Choose a Bed Frame and Headboard

Start with support. A solid wood platform frame with a slatted deck is designed to hold a mattress directly, which is why it removes the need for a box spring: the slats spread the load the way a foundation would. What matters is the gap between the slats. Closely spaced slats carry foam and hybrid mattresses properly, while wide gaps let the foam settle into the spaces and are a common cause of premature dipping. The NM platform frame sets its slats two inches apart. Then fix the size, because everything downstream follows from it. A frame is cut to one mattress footprint, headboards are sold to match a size band rather than a single size, and fitted sheets are cut to a depth as well as a width, so check the mattress size chart before you order anything else.

Then the pieces around the bed. Headboard height is the measurement to get right: work from the floor to the top of your mattress, then add however much headboard you want visible above the pillows, remembering that a taller mattress or a thicker box spring raises the mattress line and hides more of it. Both headboards here are upholstered rather than bare wood, and each is finished one way only. The George pairs a channel tufted charcoal panel with a walnut finish frame and carries a fifty inch profile, while the Layla sets a curved white boucle panel on a natural finish frame. So this is not really a finish decision. It is a decision about texture, colour and height, and about whether you would rather have the frame, a headboard, a mattress and the bedding arrive together as a bundle.

Solid Wood, Slatted Deck

A slatted platform frame supports the mattress on its own, and the NM frame sets its slats two inches apart. Our explainer covers whether platform beds need a box spring.

📏

Size It Off the Mattress

The frame, the headboard and the sheets are all cut to the mattress footprint, so settle the size first using the size chart.

Upholstered Headboards

Channel tufted charcoal on a walnut finish frame, or curved white boucle on a natural one. See our guide to choosing a bed frame height before you commit.

Or Take the Bundle

The Essentials Bedroom Bundle puts the platform frame, a headboard, a two drawer nightstand, a mattress and the bedding into one order. See sleep bundles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bed Frames and Headboards

Do I need a box spring with a slatted platform bed frame?
Not with a proper platform frame. A slatted deck does the job a box spring does, which is to hold the mattress flat and share the load across the frame. Adding a box spring on top simply raises the bed and is rarely necessary. The exception is a frame with only a few widely spaced slats, where a bunkie board or a thin platform box bridges the gaps.
How far apart should bed frame slats be?
For a foam or hybrid mattress, aim for gaps of about 3 inches or less, with slats at least a couple of inches wide. Wider gaps let the foam bow down into the spaces instead of being carried, which is a common cause of premature dipping. Manufacturers publish a spacing limit rather than a time to failure, so treat the number as the rule. Innerspring mattresses tolerate slightly wider spacing because the border wire carries some load, but closer is always safer. See slat spacing.
What size bed frame do I need for my mattress?
The frame follows the mattress, not the room. A queen frame takes a queen mattress and nothing else, so confirm the mattress size first and order the frame to match. Headboards are usually sold in bands, commonly one covering full and queen and another for king, so a queen headboard will fit a full frame but not a king one. Check the size chart.
How tall should a headboard be?
Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, then decide how much headboard you want visible above the pillows. The George here carries a fifty inch profile, which gives you one concrete reference against your own bed height. A taller mattress or a thicker box spring raises the mattress line and hides more of the panel, so measure the finished bed rather than the frame alone.
Can I buy a mattress and a bed frame together as a set?
Yes. The NM Essentials Bedroom Bundle is sold as one coordinated set: a solid wood platform frame, a memory foam or hybrid mattress, a headboard on the larger sizes, a two drawer nightstand, a waterproof protector, sheets and a pillow, in a natural or walnut finish. Buying it together removes the guesswork about whether the frame, the headboard and the mattress height suit each other. See sleep bundles.
Which headboard suits which frame?
Both headboards here are upholstered, and each comes in one finish. The George is a channel tufted charcoal panel on a walnut finish wood frame, carrying a fifty inch profile. The Layla is a curved white boucle panel on a natural finish frame. Both pair with the Willa platform base and both fit standard bolt on bed frames, so the choice is a matter of colour, texture and how much height you want behind the pillows.
